{"id":20323,"date":"2026-03-26T19:32:27","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T14:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakjazbo.com\/?p=20323"},"modified":"2026-03-26T19:32:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T14:32:29","slug":"moon-race-how-china-is-challenging-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakjazbo.com\/?p=20323","title":{"rendered":"Moon race: how China is challenging the US"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Beijing:&nbsp;Walking on the Moon by 2030, building a lunar base, and then perhaps on to Mars: after 30 years of honing its expertise, China is challenging the United States\u2019 supremacy in spaceflight.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As US space agency NASA prepares for its crewed lunar flyby mission, Artemis II, we take a look at China\u2019s ambitions in space:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2013 What is China\u2019s crewed programme? \u2013<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China\u2019s crewed space programme \u2014 known as Project 921 \u2014 was launched on September 21, 1992, aiming to develop its own expertise and space station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme has conducted around 15 crewed missions since the first flight of a Chinese astronaut, Yang Liwei, in 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blocked from the International Space Station (ISS) in 2011 by the United States, China built its own orbital hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tiangong, or \u201cHeavenly Palace\u201d, space station welcomed its first occupants in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three Chinese astronauts \u2014 known as \u201ctaikonauts\u201d \u2014 are currently staying there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The station allows China to accumulate crucial experience in spacewalks, docking, maintenance and effects on the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of China\u2019s crewed launches have been fatal, and the programme is following a long-term roadmap rather than a series of isolated projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis effectiveness stems from strong political commitment at the highest level of the state, stable funding\u2026 and the integration of the entire industrial chain into the project,\u201d said Richard de Grijs, professor of physics and astronomy at Australia\u2019s Macquarie University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCompared to the Western, and particularly US, approach, where priorities can shift with each political cycle, this model offers clear advantages in terms of predictability and risk management,\u201d he told AFP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While China\u2019s space programme has been historically slower, \u201cit won\u2019t change course at the whim of its leadership either\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2013 When will Chinese astronauts land on the Moon? \u2013<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chinese space agency (CNSA) hopes to put astronauts on the Moon by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China has already sent several robots to the Moon and brought back lunar samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a crewed mission requires different equipment, which is currently being tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China is set to conduct a test flight of its new Mengzhou (\u201cDream Ship\u201d) spacecraft in 2026. Replacing the ageing Shenzhou, it will carry astronauts into lunar orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engineers are also developing a new ultra-powerful rocket around 90-metres (295-feet) long \u2014 the Long March-10, essential for propelling the spacecraft to the Moon. It made its first low-altitude flight on February 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lanyue (\u201cSeize the Moon\u201d) lander, which will transport the astronauts from orbit to the lunar surface, could also make its maiden flight between 2028 and 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2013 Does China want a lunar base? \u2013<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China hopes to build a basic version of a crewed scientific base, called the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), by 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The base will be built near the Moon\u2019s south pole, where water in the form of ice is believed to be present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China is collaborating with Russia on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The base is expected to be built with bricks made on-site from lunar soil using 3D printers. Tested on Earth and on Tiangong, the technique is to be tested on the Moon during the uncrewed Chang\u2019e-8 mission, scheduled for around 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CNSA says it wants to carry out archaeological research into the origin of the Moon, achieve breakthroughs in strategic technologies and exploit lunar resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An expanded version of the base is planned for around 2040.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China is also developing a constellation of relay satellites around the Moon to communicate between its far side and Earth .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2013 Is this a race with the United States? \u2013<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China never talks about a \u201cMoon race\u201d or competition with the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are ambitious for the future of their program and see the Moon as the logical next step, for its own sake, not for any rivalry. I don\u2019t think it would change anything for them if America wasn\u2019t going,\u201d said Jonathan McDowell, astrophysicist and space analyst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHaving said that,\u201d he added, \u201cthe establishment of a lunar base by China would be a real challenge to America\u2019s ability to establish such a base \u2014 there\u2019s only a small amount of suitable area near the lunar south pole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, China lags behind the United States in terms of crewed flights, according to Chen Lan, a specialist in the Chinese space programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA\u2019s Dragon and Orion spacecraft remain superior compared to China\u2019s Shenzhou, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, I expect when China realises manned lunar landing by 2030 with the new spaceship and lunar landing vehicle, it will catch up with the US in the human spaceflight field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2013 Mars next? \u2013<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After 2040, the Chinese lunar base will be used to \u201cvalidate technology and capabilities for a manned mission to Mars\u201d, according to the CNSA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chinese space manufacturing companies and scientists have previously pointed to the Red Planet as a potential destination for astronauts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut I don\u2019t think that there will be serious plans to Mars before completion of the lunar landing and the initial lunar base,\u201d Chen said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beijing:&nbsp;Walking on the Moon by 2030, building a lunar base, and then perhaps on to Mars: after 30 years of honing its expertise, China is challenging the United States\u2019 supremacy in spaceflight.
