The invasive fish are not only consuming native species but are also competing for food and habitat, creating long-term ecological instability.

According to WWF Pakistan, the number of foreign fish species in these waters has increased rapidly. On January 4, a peculiar fish from Sukkur was brought to Karachi Fish Harbor, which experts identified as an Amazon Sailfin Catfish. This species has now proliferated to such an extent in Pakistan that controlling or removing it has become nearly impossible. The catfish belongs to an aggressive invasive species, known for its fast reproduction and adaptability.

These invasive fish are primarily imported for home aquariums, but at least 26 non-native species have now been detected in Pakistani rivers and lakes. They pose multiple threats: they prey on native fish, compete for food, occupy local habitats, and even introduce new diseases, all of which disrupt natural aquatic systems.

Among the most notable invasive species observed in Pakistan are the Amazon Sailfin Catfish from Latin America, Pacu fish, and Red-bellied Tilapia. Pacu, for instance, has been spotted in the Ravi and Chenab rivers, as well as Kandhkot, and has been documented to significantly reduce native fish populations, thereby upsetting the ecological balance. Red-bellied Tilapia and other aggressive species have also negatively impacted aquatic productivity, threatening both biodiversity and local fisheries.

WWF Pakistan has called for immediate suspension of foreign fish imports and the establishment of a robust quarantine system to prevent further ecological damage. Experts warn that without urgent intervention, the continued spread of invasive fish could irreversibly harm Pakistan’s freshwater ecosystems and the livelihoods dependent on them.

In a growing environmental concern, rivers in Sindh and Punjab have been overrun by non-native fish species, putting local ecosystems at serious risk.
