The decision has added a new layer of uncertainty to the tournament, which is jointly scheduled to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

According to an official statement issued by the BCB, an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors was held on Monday afternoon to review the rapidly changing situation surrounding the T20 World Cup. The meeting focused on developments over the past 24 hours, including political pressure, player safety, and the overall environment for Bangladeshi players in India. After detailed deliberations, the board unanimously decided that the Bangladesh national team would not travel to India for the tournament.

The BCB confirmed that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has been formally informed of the decision. The board stated that it is now awaiting a response from the ICC and hopes that the global governing body will understand Bangladesh’s concerns and take an appropriate and timely decision in the best interest of the tournament and player safety.

Bangladesh’s Adviser for Sports also publicly endorsed the decision, saying that the government welcomes the move taken by the cricket board. He criticized what he described as the “aggressive and sectarian policies” of the Indian cricket authorities, arguing that these policies have created an unsafe and hostile environment for Bangladeshi players. He added that national dignity, player security, and fair treatment must always take priority over sporting commitments.

Tensions between the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have reportedly intensified following the release of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sources claim that the decision to release Mustafizur was made under pressure from extremist groups in India, a move that angered Bangladeshi officials and fueled concerns about discrimination and unequal treatment of foreign players.

In light of these developments, the BCB has also decided to write a formal letter to the ICC seeking detailed information about the security arrangements for the T20 World Cup in India. According to sources, Bangladesh will request assurances regarding player safety and crowd management. At the same time, the BCB is expected to ask the ICC to relocate Bangladesh’s matches to Sri Lanka instead of India.

Under the current schedule, all of Bangladesh’s group-stage matches are set to be played in India. Three matches are scheduled in Kolkata, while one match is to be held in Mumbai. Bangladesh’s first match, against the West Indies, is scheduled for February 7 in Kolkata. However, if the ICC agrees to Bangladesh’s request, these fixtures could be shifted to Sri Lanka, where several other matches are also planned.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has gone ahead and announced its squad for the ICC T20 World Cup. Wicketkeeper-batsman Litton Kumar Das has been appointed as the team captain, while Saif Hassan will serve as vice-captain. The squad selection signals that Bangladesh remains fully committed to participating in the World Cup, provided that its concerns are addressed and acceptable arrangements are made.

Bangladesh has been placed in a competitive group alongside England, West Indies, Nepal, and Italy. Cricket analysts believe that Bangladesh has a realistic chance of advancing to the next stage, especially given the team’s recent improvements in T20 cricket and the experience of its senior players.

It is worth noting that Bangladesh is not the only team refusing to travel to India for the tournament. Pakistan has already announced that its national team will also not tour India and will instead play its T20 World Cup matches in Sri Lanka. Pakistan’s decision had earlier prompted discussions within the ICC about adopting a hybrid model for the tournament, similar to arrangements made for previous multi-nation events.

The ICC now faces a complex challenge in balancing logistics, broadcasting commitments, and political sensitivities while ensuring the smooth conduct of the tournament. Any major changes to the schedule or venues will require coordination with host boards, broadcasters, and participating teams.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially announced that it will not send its national team to India for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, citing security concerns and recent developments in relations with the Indian cricket authorities.
