He stated that for the first time in 100 years, the infrastructure of Sukkur Barrage is being fully opened and inspected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He highlighted that last year 17 gates were replaced, and although the initial plan was to replace 16 gates this year, the government has decided to replace a total of 27 gates in 2026. The gates being replaced are those that carry approximately 70% of the water flow, including the gates through which 1.2 million cusecs of water passed during the devastating 2010 floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the provincial minister, construction of barriers in front of gates numbered 15 to 22 has already begun, with the remaining gates\u2019 barriers expected to be completed by January 19. For security purposes, the barrage is undergoing comprehensive inspection with advanced machinery, both externally and internally. Counterweights are being removed, and the infrastructure is being further strengthened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He revealed that a total budget of Rs17 billion has been allocated for the replacement of Sukkur Barrage gates and 55 canal gates, with separate funds designated for desilting. For the first time, not only the mechanical components but the entire structure is being thoroughly examined. Water and sediment are being removed, and X-ray and GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) technology is being used to identify structural weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minister Shoro added that a wall, hidden for a century, has now emerged between gates 15 and 22. Additionally, desilting has started on the right side of the Rice Canal to ensure timely water supply to farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing climate change, he noted that changing weather patterns have altered water flow timings\u2014from April to now June\u2014and sudden water surges in the Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas rivers are also results of climatic shifts.
