He revealed that nearly 100,000 e-challans have already been issued, reflecting both enhanced enforcement and better monitoring of traffic violations across the metropolis.

Javed Alam Odho stated that law enforcement agencies have received credible information indicating that some motorists have begun using fake, altered, or tampered number plates to avoid identification by e-challan cameras. Terming the practice illegal and unacceptable, he said such actions undermine the rule of law and compromise road safety.

“To counter this emerging trend, Karachi Police will launch a major citywide campaign from December 19 against fake and tampered number plates,” he announced. He added that the campaign would be conducted on a large scale and would involve close coordination with the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department.

The Additional IGP explained that under the planned operation, Excise Department officials will be deployed on major arteries and key entry and exit points of the city alongside traffic police personnel. These teams will conduct spot checks to verify vehicle registration details and ensure compliance with legal number plate standards.

Javed Alam Odho made it clear that strict action would be taken against violators. “If a vehicle is found with a fake or tampered number plate, the vehicle will be impounded, and a criminal case will be registered against the owner,” he said, adding that no leniency would be shown in such cases.

He emphasized that the use of fake number plates is not only a traffic violation but also poses serious security risks, as it can be exploited for criminal activities. “Such practices make it difficult to trace vehicles involved in crimes, accidents, and other unlawful acts. This is why we are treating this issue with utmost seriousness,” he added.

The Karachi Police Chief further stated that the e-challan system was introduced to bring transparency, accountability, and discipline to the city’s chaotic traffic environment. According to him, the system has already started yielding positive results by reducing violations and improving compliance with traffic laws.

DIG Traffic Karachi, speaking on the occasion, supported the police chief’s stance and said that traffic police would fully cooperate in the campaign. He urged citizens to ensure that their vehicles carry original, clearly visible, and officially issued number plates in accordance with the law.

The CPLC Chief also highlighted the importance of public cooperation, stating that community support is essential for the success of such enforcement drives. He encouraged citizens to report suspicious vehicles and cooperate with law enforcement agencies during inspections.

Karachi Police appealed to the public to avoid illegal practices and comply with traffic laws to prevent inconvenience and legal action. Authorities reiterated that the upcoming operation aims not to harass citizens but to ensure road safety, legal compliance, and improved law enforcement in the city.

With the December 19 deadline approaching, officials have advised vehicle owners to immediately replace any unofficial or altered number plates with legally approved ones to avoid penalties, vehicle seizure, and criminal proceedings.

Karachi: Karachi Police Chief and Additional Inspector General of Sindh Javed Alam Odho has announced a large-scale crackdown against the use of fake and tampered vehicle number plates, which are allegedly being used by motorists to evade traffic challans issued under the e-challan system.
