According to official statistics, more than Rs. 710 million worth of e-challans were issued across the metropolis during a single month—reflecting both increased enforcement and widespread non-compliance with traffic regulations.

Over 93,000 E-Challans Recorded in One Month

The Karachi Traffic Police reported that over 93,000 e-challans were issued in one month for various violations captured through surveillance cameras, tracking systems, and smart monitoring tools. This large number highlights the city’s persistent traffic discipline issues and the intensive efforts by authorities to curb dangerous driving habits.

Seat Belt Violations Top the List

According to the data, the most common violation was failure to wear a seat belt, with 57,541 e-challans issued in this category alone. Despite repeated awareness campaigns, a significant number of motorists continue to disregard this basic safety rule. As a result, fines amounting to more than Rs. 574.41 million were imposed specifically for seat belt violations.

Traffic Police officials emphasized that wearing a seat belt is a fundamental safety measure that significantly reduces the risk of fatal injuries. However, public compliance remains poor, particularly among private vehicle drivers.

Over 22,000 Motorcyclists Fined for Not Wearing Helmets

The second most frequent violation involved motorcyclists riding without helmets. Traffic Police issued 22,227 e-challans against violators, leading to total fines exceeding Rs. 111.135 million.

Authorities stressed that helmet use is critical for preventing head injuries in accidents, yet a large segment of the riding population still fails to adhere to the rule. The majority of these violations were observed on major city arteries such as Shahrae Faisal, University Road, and MA Jinnah Road.

Speeding, Signal Violations, and Other Offenses

The Traffic Police also utilized trackers installed in dumpers, trailers, and water tankers to identify speeding incidents. Through these monitoring systems, 1,188 e-challans were issued for overspeeding by heavy vehicles.

Additional violations recorded during the month include:

2,699 e-challans for speeding by general motorists

3,102 e-challans for signal violations

1,278 e-challans for fancy or unauthorised number plates

1,178 e-challans for tinted windows

611 e-challans for stop-line violations

426 e-challans for driving on the wrong side (wrong-way driving)

Authorities indicated that wrong-way driving continues to be one of the most dangerous and reckless behaviors seen on Karachi roads, often resulting in fatal head-on collisions.

Tinted Windows and Fancy Plates Also Penalised

The use of tinted windows—considered a security concern as well as a violation of traffic regulations—resulted in fines amounting to Rs. 29.45 million. Similarly, drivers using illegal or fancy number plates were also heavily penalised.

Traffic Police officials said that these violations contribute to identification challenges during law enforcement operations, and hence strict action is taken.

Increasing Reliance on Technology-Based Enforcement

Karachi Traffic Police highlighted that the continued expansion of e-challan enforcement is part of a broader initiative to shift towards technology-driven monitoring. With the expansion of CCTV coverage, ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras, and GPS-based tracking for heavy vehicles, authorities aim to improve compliance and reduce risky driving behavior.

The department noted that electronic challaning has reduced the potential for roadside confrontations between police and drivers while also improving transparency.

Public Awareness Still a Challenge

Despite widespread enforcement, officials admitted that public awareness regarding traffic laws remains insufficient. They stated that many motorists only comply when penalised but rarely adopt consistent safe-driving habits.

To address this, the Traffic Police plan to launch more educational campaigns focusing on seat belt usage, helmet compliance, speed control, and adherence to lane discipline.

Karachi’s traffic enforcement system recorded a massive surge in fines during the past month, as the city’s Traffic Police released detailed data on e-challans issued for various violations.
