A high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed that 155 railway stations across the country have already been shifted to solar power, while several other transformative initiatives are underway.

Rapid Digitization Across Pakistan Railways

During the briefing, officials informed the Prime Minister that the digital transformation of Pakistan Railways is advancing steadily. Seven digital portals are currently operational, enabling improved administrative efficiency and providing better service delivery to passengers.

A total of 54 railway stations have been fully digitized, marking a noteworthy step forward in modernization. Digital displays, electronic ticketing systems, and online service platforms are being installed to streamline operations and reduce manual processes.

In addition, free Wi-Fi services have already been provided at four major stations—Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad. The government plans to extend this facility to 48 additional stations by December 31, enabling travelers to stay connected while they wait for their trains.

RABTA Integration of 56 Trains

The meeting was told that 56 passenger trains have now been integrated into the RABTA portal, a digital platform enabling passengers to check schedules, track trains, and book tickets more efficiently. This shift to an automated system is expected to significantly enhance customer experience and reduce congestion at ticketing counters.

Furthermore, Pakistan Railways has begun installing bank ATMs at various stations, adding another layer of convenience for travelers.

AI-Based Surveillance and Digital Bridge Pilot

The briefing highlighted that 148 artificial intelligence–powered surveillance cameras have been installed at Rawalpindi Railway Station. These smart cameras are expected to enhance security by monitoring crowd movement, detecting suspicious activity, and helping law enforcement respond more quickly.

A digital overpass monitoring system—referred to as the Digital Weighing Bridge—has been launched as a pilot project at the Karachi City Railway Station. The plan is to expand this facility to Pipi, Karachi Cantonment, Port Qasim, Lahore, and Rawalpindi stations as well.

Improving Station Facilities and Outsourcing Services

Officials informed the meeting that Pakistan Railways has outsourced cleaning and sanitation services at several stations to ensure higher standards of maintenance. New, modern waiting areas have been constructed at major stations to facilitate passengers during peak travel times. Food inspection authorities from all four provinces have also been granted access to railway stations to ensure the availability of clean and quality food items.

The government has pursued outsourcing in multiple areas to increase efficiency and revenue. So far, four trains have already been outsourced, and 11 more are scheduled for outsourcing soon. The department is expecting an 8.5 billion rupee increase in revenue as a result of these initiatives.

Additionally, 40 luggage vans and brake vans have been outsourced, which is projected to generate 820 million rupees in extra revenue.

Reforms in Railway Hospitals and Educational Institutions

The meeting also reviewed progress on outsourcing railway hospitals across Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta, and Sukkur. Outsourcing plans for Pakistan Railways’ schools, colleges, and rest houses are also underway, aiming to improve service quality and reduce the financial burden on the department.

155 Stations Transitioned to Solar Energy

A major highlight of the briefing was the announcement that 155 railway stations have been switched to solar power, significantly cutting energy costs while contributing to environmental sustainability. This transition is part of the government’s broader aim to adopt clean energy solutions across key public-sector institutions.

Officials added that planning is underway for the upgradation of Main Line-1 (ML-1) between Karachi and Kotri as well as Main Line-3 (ML-3), as Pakistan continues to pursue long-delayed railway infrastructure enhancement.

International Railway Connectivity Projects

The meeting reviewed multiple international railway initiatives. The government is preparing to launch the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul train service, which will bolster trade and strengthen regional connectivity between Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey.

Similarly, preliminary work has begun on the Kazakhstan–Uzbekistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan (KUAP) rail corridor, a project expected to enhance Pakistan’s role in regional commerce and logistics.

The Sindh government is also collaborating with Pakistan Railways on the Thar Rail Connectivity Project, which aims to link Thar’s energy-rich region with the national railway network.

Prime Minister’s Directives

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed satisfaction with the railway reforms but emphasized the need for continued efforts. He instructed officials to seek the expertise of legal and economic specialists to ensure that the reforms are sustainable and in line with global best practices. He also called for adopting public-private partnership models to optimize the use of railway land and property.

Pakistan Railways has made significant progress in modernizing its infrastructure, digitizing services, and adopting renewable energy solutions as part of a wider national effort to enhance efficiency and boost revenue.
