But this winter season, as in previous years, the region’s avian visitors are once again facing a severe and growing threat — large-scale illegal hunting — while local wildlife authorities remain conspicuously silent, say residents and environmentalists.

Locals report that the poaching is widespread across several coastal locations, including Golarchi, the Nariri coastal strip, and surrounding wetlands and tidal flats. According to eyewitness accounts, organized groups of local hunters and powerful interests are using nets, firearms and other trapping methods to capture and kill migratory birds on an industrial scale. The nets and guns are reportedly deployed at night and during dawn and dusk — peak movement times for many species — making it exceptionally difficult for ordinary residents to intervene.

“The birds arrive exhausted after a long migration and gather in our lakes and tidal flats; they are easy targets,” said a local fisherman who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals. “People set nets across channels and shoot in flocks. It’s heartbreaking. We used to enjoy watching these birds — now we hear only gunshots and see carcasses.”

Environmental experts warn that the unchecked slaughter is not merely an animal-welfare issue but a serious ecological threat. Migratory birds play vital roles in regional ecological balance — from seed dispersal and pest control to nutrient cycling in wetlands. “These species are integral to the health of our coastal ecosystems,” said a regional conservationist. “Large-scale removals can disrupt food webs, reduce biodiversity and degrade the resilience of wetland habitats that many local communities depend on for fishing and agriculture.”

Local residents and environmental groups accuse the Wildlife Department of failing to enforce conservation laws. Despite repeated reports and media coverage over the years, they say, the department has not mounted meaningful field operations to halt poaching or arrest the perpetrators. “Every year we see media stories and documents that show the department is taking action, but in practice there are no raids, no confiscations, and no prosecutions,” said a spokesperson for one local NGO. “The department’s inaction emboldens poachers.”

Compounding public frustration is the involvement — or alleged protection — of influential local figures. Residents claim that some hunters operate under the shield of powerful patrons, which deters field staff and police from taking enforcement steps. “If the people responsible were ordinary locals, they would have been caught long ago,” said one villager. “But because they are backed by strong connections, nothing happens.”

Health and livelihood concerns are also emerging. The illegal trade in migratory birds and their parts — sometimes sold in informal markets — raises food-safety issues. Moreover, as bird populations decline, local fishers and farmers warn of cascading effects on fish stocks and crop pest pressures, which could harm incomes in already vulnerable communities.

Badin Every year the coastal belt of Badin becomes a temporary refuge for thousands of migratory birds that journey from Russia, China, Siberia and other cold-region countries.
