However, even before the teams step onto the field, tensions are brewing off it — this time over the Asia Cup trophy dispute, which has once again exposed the frosty cricketing relationship between the two neighbors.

According to Indian media reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has maintained a defiant stance, refusing to receive the Asia Cup trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. BCCI Secretary Debajit Saikia confirmed that a formal letter has been sent to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) demanding that the trophy be sent directly to India rather than being handed over in person. He warned that if the issue isn’t resolved, India will take the matter to the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Sources indicate that India has also secured support from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, adding diplomatic weight to its position within the regional cricketing bloc. The dispute, however, has not gone unanswered — the PCB has already obtained legal advice to ensure that any attempt by the Indian board to bypass established procedures can be countered through proper legal and administrative channels.

The ACC, which oversees the Asia Cup, had proposed November 10 as the date for a ceremonial handover of the trophy. Pakistan, as the last Asia Cup champion, was expected to formally pass the trophy to India during this event. The ACC’s offer was meant to preserve tradition and promote goodwill, but India’s resistance has now turned the symbolic event into a matter of principle and prestige.

Cricket insiders say the situation highlights the deep-seated mistrust that continues to affect sporting relations between the two countries. While both teams are preparing for one of the most-watched fixtures in world cricket, the off-field wrangling over a trophy has injected fresh political tension into the sport.

Observers also note that Pakistan’s decision to seek legal counsel demonstrates a proactive and assertive strategy to defend its rights and ensure the rules governing international cricket tournaments are upheld. The PCB’s legal team is reportedly drafting a formal response that could be presented to the ACC and, if necessary, to the ICC’s dispute resolution committee.

KARACHI — The highly anticipated Pakistan–India T20 World Cup showdown is set to take place on February 8 in Colombo, promising a fiery start to the global tournament.
