US President Donald Trump has said he is prepared to impose major new sanctions on Russia if NATO member states agree to stop purchasing Russian fuel.

In his remarks, Trump urged NATO allies to adopt similar measures against Moscow. “If NATO countries stop buying energy from Russia, then we are ready for big sanctions,” he stated.

Trump also argued that conditional tariffs on China—ranging between 50% and 100%—would help bring the Ukraine war to an end. He explained that such tariffs would be suspended once the war concludes, as China exerts significant influence over Russia, and weakening that leverage could accelerate peace.

The US president stressed that the conflict is not America’s war but one started by President Biden and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. “I am helping to stop the war and save the lives of Ukrainians and Russians,” Trump said, adding that NATO must follow his lead. “If NATO does what I say, the war will end quickly. If not, it will only waste my time and American taxpayers’ money.”

Meanwhile, Washington has pressed the G7 and the European Union to target nations still purchasing Russian oil, particularly India and China. At the G7 finance ministers’ meeting, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bassant called on allies to join the US in imposing tariffs on countries continuing to buy Russian crude. He insisted that only a united strategy can weaken President Vladimir Putin’s war machine.

US President Donald Trump has said he is prepared to impose major new sanctions on Russia if NATO member states agree to stop purchasing Russian fuel.
