What was once a lively residential quarter has now turned into a congested maze where blocked streets, illegal constructions, and piles of garbage have made everyday life unbearable for the local residents.

A Neighborhood Under Siege

Encroachments have narrowed the streets to such an extent that movement has become a daily struggle. According to residents, individuals have extended their houses and shops beyond their legal boundaries, constructing additional structures on public pathways. As a result, once open and accessible lanes have shrunk to barely walkable alleys.

This rampant practice has not only caused difficulties for pedestrians and vehicle owners but has also severely restricted the access of rescue services. Ambulances, fire brigades, and other emergency vehicles can no longer enter these neighborhoods, raising the fear that even a small fire or medical emergency could spiral into a major tragedy.

The Human Cost of Inaction

Local resident Muhammad Naeem Soomro explained that people of the area have made repeated efforts to draw the attention of authorities to this crisis. Multiple written and verbal complaints have been lodged with higher officials. Yet, to the dismay of residents, no meaningful action has been taken.

“The silence of the administration has created an atmosphere of hopelessness,” said Soomro. “We are left on our own to suffer. Our children, our elderly, everyone is forced to live in these inhuman conditions. If something happens here, neither ambulance nor fire brigade will be able to save lives.”

The lack of response from authorities has only deepened the frustration of the residents. Many feel abandoned, as though their voices do not matter. They say they are forced to wander from one office to another, pleading for action, but have only faced closed doors and excuses.

Encroachment Meets Pollution

Alongside illegal structures, the unchecked spread of garbage has worsened living conditions in Kari Quarters. Piles of uncollected waste litter the streets, while drains remain clogged, causing foul smells and breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Residents complain that this toxic combination of encroachment and pollution has turned their once-thriving neighborhood into a health hazard.

“The garbage heaps are growing, and the government does not seem to care,” another resident remarked. “Diseases are spreading. Children fall ill frequently, and the elderly are the most vulnerable. If immediate measures are not taken, this area could face an outbreak of epidemics.”

A Community’s Desperate Appeal

Despite these grim realities, the residents of Kari Quarters have not given up hope entirely. They are now appealing directly to the highest authorities. They have urged the Sindh Chief Minister, Sukkur Commissioner, and Deputy Commissioner to launch an immediate and large-scale anti-encroachment operation.

Their demand is clear: remove all illegal structures, especially in and around the Tonga Stand and Rehmani Mosque areas. Residents believe such an operation will not only open up the streets and ease daily movement but also restore the possibility of emergency vehicles entering the locality in times of crisis.

A Historical Area Losing Its Charm

Kari Quarters is not just another neighborhood—it is one of the oldest and most historically significant residential areas of Sukkur. Once known for its vibrant social life and close-knit community, it is now being suffocated by urban mismanagement and neglect.

Urban experts argue that if the situation is left unchecked, Kari Quarters will not only lose its livability but also its historical and cultural identity. Encroachment and poor sanitation, they warn, are eating away at the very fabric of this old city space.

Urgent Need for Action

The case of Kari Quarters is a textbook example of how unchecked encroachment, poor governance, and lack of planning can destroy urban neighborhoods. Residents stress that the issue is not beyond repair—if decisive action is taken now. By reclaiming public pathways, clearing garbage, and enforcing municipal laws, the area can once again become a safe and livable space.

Residents like Muhammad Naeem Soomro emphasize that they are not asking for luxuries—only for their basic rights: clean streets, open pathways, and access to emergency services. “We just want Kari Quarters to be what it once was—a clean, peaceful neighborhood where people can live with dignity,” he said.

Conclusion

Old Sukkur’s Kari Quarters stands at a crossroads. Either the authorities take swift, meaningful action to clear encroachments and restore the area, or the crisis will deepen, pushing residents into greater misery and posing a risk to public health and safety.

For now, the community waits anxiously—hoping that their pleas will finally be heard, and their historic neighborhood will be given back its lost identity, free from the chains of encroachment and neglect

Sukkur (Report by Danish Rajput) –The historic and densely populated neighborhood of Kari Quarters in Old Sukkur, particularly the areas around the Tonga Stand and the Rehmani Mosque, has been overwhelmed by growing encroachments.
