Acting on a court notice, K-Electric representatives were summoned to explain the disruptions.

During Wednesday’s hearing, the officials admitted to lapses in service delivery and assured the court that preventive measures have now been put in place to avoid similar large-scale breakdowns and technical faults in the future. They submitted that a strategy has been developed to strengthen grid reliability and response mechanisms. As part of this plan, K-Electric has provided the court with the contact details and names of area officers responsible for overseeing uninterrupted supply and quick restoration in case of outages.

The utility’s officials further informed the bench that certain officers had already been transferred from their posts due to negligence, while disciplinary action would be taken against others found responsible for mismanagement.

The issue had been formally raised after the Additional Registrar (Coordination) issued a notice to the K-Electric Managing Director on August 22. The notice reminded the company that, under NEPRA regulations, K-Electric is legally obligated to ensure continuous power supply to its consumers. It further pointed out that, as a utility service provider, the company should have contingency arrangements and backup systems to deal with emergencies such as heavy rains or system failures.

The court was particularly critical of K-Electric’s inability to provide uninterrupted service during the monsoon, especially in sensitive cases involving high-profile consumers like judges. The officials’ apology was taken on record, but the court indicated that it would continue to monitor whether K-Electric delivers on its commitments in the coming weeks.

The case highlights broader frustrations in Karachi, where frequent breakdowns, overbilling complaints, and service inefficiencies have long been sources of public anger against K-Electric. While Wednesday’s hearing was triggered by outages at judges’ homes, it has amplified calls for stronger regulatory oversight and improved accountability of the city’s sole power distributor.

KARACHI – Senior officials of K-Electric appeared before the Sindh High Court and offered an apology after prolonged power outages disrupted electricity supply to the residences of sitting judges during recent heavy rains in the city.
