Heavy monsoon rains have resulted in accumulated water that has transformed the streets into stagnant pools, leaving thousands of people stranded and struggling with their daily routines.

Stagnant Water Outside Agha Shahab College and Residential Areas

One of the worst-affected spots is the area in front of Agha Shahab College, where accumulated rainwater has formed large puddles. The situation worsened to the extent that the college administration was compelled to announce holidays for students, disrupting the educational calendar. Families expressed their anger that such institutions are forced to close not due to natural disasters alone, but because of sheer negligence in drainage management.

Additionally, the expensive bungalows and residential streets across Phase One have also been inundated, with residents unable to move freely in or out of their neighborhoods. The accumulated water, combined with sewage overflow, has created foul smells and unhygienic conditions that pose major health hazards.

Open Manholes Create Life-Threatening Hazards

The rainfall has exposed another dangerous issue — many manholes in Qasimabad are left uncovered. In waterlogged streets, these open manholes are almost invisible, posing a severe risk of accidents, particularly for children and pedestrians. Residents have voiced strong concerns that lives are being put in danger due to WASA’s lack of preparation.

Flooding Near Dargah Noor Shah Bukhari

Another hotspot of the crisis is the area near Dargah Noor Shah Bukhari. Here, the roads have completely disappeared under the combined force of rainwater and sewage overflow, making it nearly impossible for residents to commute. Local citizens reported that small shops and businesses in the vicinity have shut down, further straining livelihoods.

The prolonged stagnation of water has also heightened fears of the spread of waterborne diseases, such as cholera, dengue, and malaria. Without drainage, the mix of sewage and rainwater becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes, threatening the health of entire communities.

Schools Cut Off in New Wahdat Colony

The New Wahdat Colony has also been heavily affected. The main school road has been entirely submerged, forcing hundreds of schoolchildren to stay home. Parents expressed frustration that their children are being deprived of education, not because of an unavoidable natural disaster, but because the authorities have failed to create even basic drainage solutions in one of Hyderabad’s most developed residential zones.

Officials Accused of Sleeping Through Crisis

Community leaders and residents have openly accused WASA Hyderabad, the Qasimabad Water Commission, and the Buildings Department of total negligence. Citizens complain that the officials remain “in deep sleep” while the public struggles with paralyzed mobility, closed schools, and deteriorating health conditions.

Visit by Hyderabad Mayor and Community Leaders

In response to growing outrage, the Mayor of Hyderabad visited Qasimabad Phase One to inspect the situation. He observed water stagnation in front of Agha Shahab College, the flooding near Dargah Noor Shah Bukhari, and the damage caused to roads. However, residents demanded more than visits and photo opportunities — they called for immediate, practical measures.

At the same time, social activist Shahid Soomro, accompanied by several other community representatives, visited various neighborhoods in Phase One. Speaking with affected residents, he strongly criticized the negligence of municipal authorities.

“Stagnant water has already started destroying our roads. Without immediate drainage, these roads will collapse completely. WASA and other concerned departments must urgently clear all sewerage lines to allow rainwater to flow out,” said Soomro.

Infrastructure Damage and Safety Concerns

Experts warn that the prolonged presence of stagnant water will cause irreparable damage to Qasimabad’s infrastructure. Newly constructed or repaired roads are rapidly breaking apart under waterlogging. Deep potholes and cracks are emerging, increasing the risk of accidents for vehicles and motorcycles.

Equally alarming are the safety risks. Open manholes, submerged in water, can lead to fatal accidents. Electricity poles standing in flooded streets pose electrocution hazards, especially in areas where power lines are not properly insulated. Residents are demanding urgent repair and safety measures to prevent a potential tragedy.

Calls for Immediate Action

Local communities are calling for the installation of water pumps to drain the stagnant water, a citywide fumigation campaign to combat mosquito breeding, and emergency medical camps to treat waterborne illnesses. They insist that WASA and the Water Commission must take responsibility instead of shifting blame.

Residents also want transparency in how municipal funds are used. They point out that taxpayers contribute millions each year, yet when the monsoon arrives, the city is paralyzed because the drainage system is left unmaintained. Citizens demand a permanent and sustainable drainage system to prevent yearly crises.

Human Suffering Amid Administrative Failure

The crisis in Qasimabad has become a daily struggle for ordinary people. Families cannot leave their homes, workers cannot reach offices, children are deprived of education, and patients cannot access hospitals. With sewage and rainwater mixing, even basic necessities like clean drinking water are under threat.

“This is not just an inconvenience. This is a humanitarian crisis created by neglect. If immediate steps are not taken, we will face outbreaks of disease and long-term infrastructural collapse,” warned a resident during the Mayor’s visit.

Conclusion

The waterlogging disaster in Qasimabad Phase One is a glaring example of how poor governance and negligence can turn monsoon rains into a humanitarian crisis. With schools shut, roads collapsing, and health hazards multiplying, the residents are bearing the brunt of WASA Hyderabad’s inefficiency. Unless urgent measures are undertaken — including drainage, cleaning of sewerage lines, and infrastructure repair — Qasimabad will continue to drown in mismanagement year after year.

Hyderabad, August 23, 2025 –For three consecutive days, the residents of Qasimabad Phase One, Hyderabad, have been enduring a severe urban flood crisis caused by the failure of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and the Hyderabad Water Commission.
