Pakistan’s cricket selectors have announced the 17-member squad for the upcoming Tri-Nation T20 Series in the UAE as well as the Asia Cup 2025, leaving out two of the team’s most prominent names — Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. The decision, unveiled during a press conference by chief selector and high-performance director Aaqib Javed along with head coach Mike Hesson, has sparked major debate in the cricketing fraternity.

The tri-nation series featuring Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the UAE is scheduled to be played in Sharjah from August 29 to September 7, while the Asia Cup will follow shortly after, running from September 9 to 28, with matches spread across Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Squad Announcement and Key Inclusions

The selectors retained Salman Ali Agha as the captain, continuing the trust placed in him after recent series. Other notable names in the squad include Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Khushdil Shah, Hussain Talat, and Saim Ayub. The bowling unit features Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim Jr., Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, and Hasan Ali, while batting options are bolstered with Mohammad Haris, Hasan Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan, Salman Mirza, and Sufyan Muqeem.

Interestingly, the selectors also rewarded Salman Mirza for his strong performances in Bangladesh, bringing him back into the fold, while Sahibzada Farhan earned his place with several match-winning innings.

Coach’s Perspective: Stability Over Experimentation

Head coach Mike Hesson, speaking at the press conference, emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in the squad. “We have won six out of our last nine matches. One game was lost on the final ball. There was no reason to make too many changes,” Hesson explained. He added that Salman Mirza’s consistent performance in Bangladesh was a major reason behind his selection.

He highlighted the team’s balance, stating that the squad is competitive enough to challenge any side in the world. “This team has the potential to beat India. Pakistan vs. India is always a huge contest, and we are confident this squad is capable of delivering at that stage.”

Aaqib Javed’s Comments: Faith in Current Top Order

Chief selector Aaqib Javed provided further insights, particularly addressing the absence of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. He clarified that the decision was not permanent and that both players remain in the larger pool of talent. “Babar and Rizwan were not part of the last three series either. If they play in the same way as others, they will surely return to the T20 side. It’s not that we are closing doors on them. But at the moment, our top-order combination of Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, and Sahibzada Farhan is performing well,” Aaqib said.

He argued that assessing a player’s form based on only two or three matches is unfair. “Babar played well in the first match, and he has been told to improve in certain areas. Sahibzada Farhan has been ‘Man of the Match’ in three of his last six games. That tells us about his impact.”

Aaqib further remarked that if someone insists on playing T20 cricket with a purely defensive mindset, then perhaps they should reconsider their role. “T20 cricket requires intent. Saim, Sahibzada, and Fakhar have been showing that intent, and that is why we trust them.”

Babar and Rizwan: Omission Explained

The omission of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, who for years have been the backbone of Pakistan’s T20 batting, has understandably raised eyebrows. However, both Hesson and Javed maintained that the decision was based purely on form and tactical balance rather than personal preference.

According to Aaqib, Babar and Rizwan now have the chance to prove themselves in foreign leagues such as the Big Bash League (BBL). “Senior players will have the opportunity to showcase their talent abroad. Whoever performs well will be brought back into the national setup. The competition is open,” he noted.

He also stressed that Pakistan’s current batting lineup has evolved, and the management wants to back the youngsters who are delivering results. “Dropping someone based on only two or three matches is not a fair judgment. But at the same time, rewarding players who have proven themselves over multiple series is necessary. Right now, we have good options available, and that is why the top order is being kept as it is.”

Confidence Ahead of the Asia Cup

Both the coach and selector expressed confidence in the announced squad’s ability to take on the challenges of both the tri-nation tournament and the Asia Cup. Hesson pointed out that the balance of pace and spin, coupled with aggressive batting, gives Pakistan an edge. “This is not a side of experiments but of performers. Our bowlers like Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf are proven match-winners, while youngsters like Abrar Ahmed and Sufyan Muqeem provide exciting spin options.”

Aaqib added, “This group has been playing together and developing a strong chemistry. Our hope is that they will continue this momentum in the coming tournaments.”

The Bigger Picture: Transition in Pakistani T20 Cricket

The announcement reflects a transition phase in Pakistan’s T20 cricket, where the management is trying to balance the experience of senior players with the hunger and explosiveness of younger talent. By retaining Salman Ali Agha as captain and giving extended runs to emerging stars like Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan, Pakistan is signaling its intent to build a side ready for future challenges, especially the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Still, the absence of Babar and Rizwan — two names synonymous with Pakistan’s T20 success in recent years — will remain a major talking point. Whether this bold decision pays off will largely depend on how well the team performs in the upcoming assignments.

For now, though, the selectors seem committed to backing form players over reputations, sending a strong message that no one’s place in the T20 side is guaranteed.
