Pakistan’s cricket captain, Mohammad Rizwan, has attributed his team’s defeat against the West Indies in the final and deciding One-Day International (ODI) to the loss of early wickets during their run chase. The West Indies clinched the three-match series 2–1 after a commanding 202-run victory in the third ODI, delivering a dominant performance that left Pakistan struggling in the final stages of the game.

Speaking after the match, Rizwan admitted that Pakistan had the upper hand for much of the contest but failed to maintain their momentum.

“For the first 40 overs, we had the match in our hands,” he said. “But the West Indian batters played brilliantly in the closing stages, and after we lost three quick wickets in our chase, we could not recover.”

Shai Hope’s Brilliance and Jaden Seales’ Consistency

Rizwan praised West Indies skipper Shai Hope for his exceptional batting performance in the series decider. Hope’s innings proved pivotal in setting a challenging total for Pakistan. Rizwan also singled out West Indies fast bowler Jaden Seales for his consistent and disciplined bowling across the series, describing him as one of the key reasons for the West Indies’ success.

“Shai Hope played a fantastic innings,” Rizwan said. “And Jaden Seales bowled extremely well throughout the series. His accuracy and ability to take wickets at crucial moments kept us under pressure.”

A Pitch Familiar but Still Challenging

Rizwan noted that the match was played on the same pitch for the third time in the series. While familiarity with the surface should have been an advantage, he admitted that the West Indies adapted better during the final stages.

“This was the third match on the same pitch, so both teams knew how it would play,” Rizwan explained. “But in the last 10 overs, their batting was outstanding. They accelerated brilliantly, and we struggled to contain them.”

The captain also acknowledged that Pakistan’s bowling attack lacked depth in the absence of a fifth specialist bowler. Instead, part-time bowlers Saud Shakeel and Salman Ali Agha were called upon to deliver eight overs each, which limited the team’s ability to apply consistent pressure.

Early Wickets Derail the Chase

In the run chase, Pakistan’s innings faltered early when three wickets fell in quick succession. This sudden collapse disrupted the batting rhythm and forced the middle order to play under constant pressure. Rizwan admitted that after this early setback, the team never fully regained control of the match.

“Once we lost those early wickets, it became very difficult,” Rizwan said. “We tried to rebuild, but the West Indies bowlers kept it tight and kept picking up wickets.”

Series Overview and Missed Opportunities

The three-match ODI series was tightly contested, with both sides displaying moments of brilliance. Pakistan had won the first match convincingly, but the West Indies bounced back in the second, setting up a winner-takes-all contest in the final ODI. Rizwan said the series could have gone either way but acknowledged that his team failed to capitalize on key moments.

“Cricket is about taking your chances,” Rizwan reflected. “We had opportunities in all three matches, but in this final game, the West Indies played the big moments better than we did.”

Bowling Concerns and Future Plans

One of the recurring themes in Rizwan’s post-match comments was Pakistan’s shortage of bowling options. With only four frontline bowlers in the playing XI, the team was forced to rely heavily on part-time options, which reduced their ability to maintain consistent pressure on the opposition. Rizwan hinted that this would be a key area for improvement moving forward.

“We can say we didn’t have a proper fifth bowler,” he admitted. “When you have to depend on two players to bowl eight overs each, it changes the balance of the side. That’s something we need to address before our next series.”

Credit to the Opposition

Despite his disappointment, Rizwan was gracious in defeat, crediting the West Indies for their strong all-round performance. He acknowledged that the West Indian team had shown resilience, especially in the final match, where they batted deep into their innings and bowled with discipline.

“Full credit to them,” he said. “They played the last game like a final. In the last 10 overs, their batting was top-class, and they backed it up with excellent bowling.”

Looking Ahead

Rizwan emphasized the need for Pakistan to learn from this series and work on key weaknesses, especially batting under pressure and maintaining composure after early setbacks. He also stressed the importance of building a more balanced bowling attack for future contests.

“We will sit down, analyze our mistakes, and come back stronger,” Rizwan promised. “We have a talented squad, and with the right adjustments, we can perform much better in our upcoming matches.”

Conclusion

The 202-run defeat in the series decider was a tough blow for Pakistan, especially after being in control for much of the game’s early stages. While Rizwan’s men showed glimpses of quality, the combination of early wickets, a lack of bowling depth, and West Indies’ brilliance in the final overs ultimately cost them the match and the series.

As Pakistan looks ahead to its next international assignments, the lessons from this series — particularly the importance of batting stability, depth in bowling, and capitalizing on key moments — will be critical in shaping their approach. Meanwhile, the West Indies will take confidence from their victory, having proven their ability to handle high-pressure situations and deliver when it matters most.
